MAKING THE SWITCH TO A TRULY NATURAL SHAMPOO:
Shampoo without the harsh chemicals.
Our seaweed shampoo bar is detergent-free, which means it will get your hair clean naturally without harsh chemicals. The oils we use are fully converted to soap, to gently clean the hair and scalp without stripping away your natural skin oils. The experience of using a shampoo bar is different than a liquid shampoo. Here are some tips and information to help you with the switch.
It's not going to be like the LUSH bar!
LUSH uses synthetic detergents (including Sodium Laureth Sulfate), in their shampoo bars. It is a solid form of detergent pressed into "noodles" to make it essentially the same thing as a typical liquid shampoo brand.
The LUSH bar is made of "noodles" of SLS (synthetic detergent) pressed together.
Having problems with excessively oily or flaky scalp?
The problem with detergent of any type is it is really great at removing oils, which means it can strip away all of your natural scalp oils, causing your scalp to produce too many oils. That is why conventional shampoos need to be used every day. It's a vicious cycle. Your scalp is dried out by the shampoo - it produces excess oils to replenish moisture - you need to shampoo by the next day because your scalp is oily.
With some people, instead of oiliness, detergent shampoos can cause flakiness and itchiness similar to dandruff.
We are here to break the cycle.
Our bar is made with a soap base of coconut oils combined with green tea seed oil, a powerful conditioner. The oils are converted to soap, so they wash clean and won't leave the hair oily. We don't use detergents. Your scalp will just be clean, not stripped of all moisture. The cycle of having to shampoo daily is something you can then switch away from.
Don’t expect it to be perfect overnight!
It may take a few weeks of washes for your hair to adjust to the ingredients and consistency of our natural shampoo bar, so stick with it. Most traditional shampoos have gums, thickeners and silicones, which can build up on the hair. These don’t easily wash off without strong chemicals, so it may take several weeks before your hair and scalp are free from build up.
For many hair types, the transition to a shampoo bar can be helped with a little baking soda. Dip your damp bar into a small container of baking soda (we keep a container in the shower), then lather up the bar on your head. This helps counter-act any possible buildup from hard water minerals.
Alternative baking soda method:
Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda with 8 oz water, shake well and saturate hair with this mixture before shampooing.
Lather on your head!
Rub the bar directly onto wet hair to maximize the amount of suds that get lathered into the hair! Our bar has a rich, thick, luxurious lather, especially when you lather twice.
Rinse it completely.
Unlike a liquid shampoo, suds from a shampoo bar might not rinse out as quickly, so make sure to rinse thoroughly.
Use ACV to "condition" and detangle!
Apple cider vinegar (diluted, 1 tablespoon vinegar to 8 oz water) is actually the perfect pH level for your hair and scalp. It softens the hair shaft and smooths your hair without causing buildup. Your vinegar can be filtered or have the "mother" inside - both versions work. Add a few drops of essential oils of your choice if you don’t like vinegar smell! Rinse the "conditioner" fully so you don’t smell like a salad. :)
Keep it dry.
To make your bar last longer, store it in an area of your bathroom or shower where it can dry fully between washes, and use a wooden soap deck to keep it from sitting in water.
Shampoo less often!
As you transition to a natural shampoo bar, you’ll find that your scalp produces less oil (because synthetic detergents are not drying out your scalp). Less oil means you can go more days between shampooing. Most of our customers are able to transition away from daily washes to once every few days or even every two weeks!
Color treated hair is different.
We don’t use silicones, so the damaged hair shaft won’t be covered up with a coating of silicone. Your naked hair will be revealed. If the hair is fundamentally damaged from chemical color and bleach treatments, our bar won’t necessarily cover that up. Our bar is extremely gentle, but it’s not guaranteed to flatter heavily bleached/ colored hair. Some shampoo bar users like to do a deep overnight oil treatment every few weeks to help replenish oils in damaged & colored hair. You can even use a hair serum to give extra moisture every day.
If you don’t like the shampoo bar for your colored hair, you can always use it as a body wash bar (yes, it’s that gentle!).
We are earth friendly!
Instead of going through plastic bottles of shampoo, just recycle the paper wrapping our bar comes in. Less impact on the environment, closer to zero-waste. Still have plastic shampoo bottles to get rid of? Bring them by our retail store and we'll help you keep them out of landfills. Read about our partnership with TerraCycle here.
